The Last Colony
by John Scalzi
John Perry continues as the main protagonist from his role in Old Man’s War and The Ghost Brigades. Now he is mustered out with his new wife, an ex-Special Forces trooper. An ex- in other things also. The CU, Colonial Union, has been ultimatum-ed by the Conclave. Unless they join they will never be allowed to settle another colony. In true keeping the bad news from the citizenry traditions the CU has not spread this word and is rather going to seed another Colony with John and his wife…wait for it…Jane as the administrators. Anyone who knows anything about how the US colonization went should have sensed something up when the powers that be decided to name the new colony Roanoke.
Anyway, wrong world, standing, encountering unexpected sentient yet vicious life and being used as bait to shape Galactic Events are just some of the things pulled off in this work with sarcasm and Tale Twisting. A thoroughly enjoyable story. I recommend listening to All three sequentially to get full enjoyment. The only thing I wish about this is that the stories were paired together. 9 hours and change is almost a short story in the world of audiobooks. Nevertheless I give this four out five for narration and story. Enjoy!
