I will start posting my book reviews here, that is reviews I do on the works of others. Seems a healthy habit.
Blood and Light (Book1)
by Rue Volley
(Spoiler Alert-Not on plot just on the Blood and Light Universe)
Blood and Light takes a somewhat different approach to the Vampire trope in the appearance, lore, reaction to sunlight and dietary needs are very different. Gone are the pasty pale vampires always covered in dark clothing like the goth-emo kids hanging in the schoolyard. Now they are called protectors and wear white to do battle. They are also fit, sexy and have complexion.
The lore is different regarding their creation myth which is nature based with magic. It is light and non-evil until several of the race discover the power of the dark side which leads to conflict.
Mirrors in vampire lore had always been avoided because their images would not show up as a reminder that they were soulless. Not so, because Rue Volley’s vampires use them as transportation devices which means if you don’t pay attention then something nasty may come through the mirror and there will be blood.
One of my favorite things about Rue’s vampires is that they do not glitter. There is absolutely no need for it and the reader should feel better knowing that they don’t have to suppress snickers every time a vamp hits the light.
Food for the non-evil but still trying to get laid vampires consists of the same food that we all eat. They only use blood to regenerate after battle.
I enjoyed Rue Volleys trip into the world of vampires and I would recommend this book to those who are really into Vampires but not so much into horror or links to Satan. Let me be clear, I recommend this book.
